What is post-diagnostic psychological support for ADHD?
Post-diagnostic support focuses on helping you understand how ADHD shows up in your daily life and developing practical, compassionate strategies to live well with it. Rather than reassessing the diagnosis, therapy supports adjustment, emotional wellbeing, identity, relationships, and day-to-day functioning.
I’ve already been diagnosed, how can therapy still help?
Many people find that receiving an ADHD diagnosis brings relief alongside confusion, grief, or self-criticism. Therapy can help you make sense of your experiences, unlearn unhelpful narratives, build self-compassion, and develop strategies that work with your brain rather than against it.
Do you provide ADHD assessments or medication management?
Yes, see Adult ADHD Assessments. However, this part of our service is for post-diagnostic psychological support only. I do not prescribe medication, but I can work alongside your GP, psychiatrist, or ADHD service with your consent.
What difficulties can post-diagnostic ADHD therapy help with?
Support may help with:
- Emotional regulation and overwhelm
- Low self-esteem, shame, or imposter syndrome
- Procrastination and avoidance
- Burnout and chronic stress
- Perfectionism or all-or-nothing thinking
- Relationship or work-related difficulties
- Adjustment following a late diagnosis
- Co-occurring anxiety, depression, or trauma
- Practical strategies for managing cognitive challenges
What therapeutic approaches do you use for ADHD?
Therapy is tailored to the individual and may draw on:
- CBT adapted for ADHD
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
- Neuropsychological understanding of attention, executive function, and emotional regulation
- Trauma-informed approaches, where relevant
The focus is on sustainable, realistic change rather than rigid systems or “fixing” yourself.
Is this the same as ADHD coaching?
Psychological therapy and ADHD coaching overlap but are not the same. Coaching often focuses on practical skills and accountability. Psychological therapy also addresses emotional wellbeing, identity, trauma history, self-criticism, and mental health difficulties that commonly co-occur with ADHD. Sessions may include practical strategies, but within a therapeutic framework.
Do you work with people diagnosed later in life?
Yes. Many adults—particularly women—are diagnosed in adulthood. Therapy can help process the emotional impact of a late diagnosis, including grief for missed support, anger, relief, or confusion, and support you in redefining your sense of self.
Do I need to have a “severe” level of difficulty to benefit?
No. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from post-diagnostic support. Many people seek therapy to better understand themselves, reduce burnout, or build a more sustainable and compassionate way of living with ADHD.
How practical is the therapy?
Therapy is collaborative and practical, but also reflective. We may explore routines, boundaries, energy management, and prioritisation—while also working with emotional responses, values, and self-beliefs that influence how strategies are used in real life.
How long does post-diagnostic ADHD therapy last?
The length of therapy varies. Some people attend for a short, focused period, while others prefer longer-term support, particularly when ADHD intersects with trauma, anxiety, or longstanding self-criticism. We review progress regularly and work at a pace that suits you.
Is this suitable if I am autistic or have other neurodivergent traits?
Yes. Therapy is neurodiversity-affirming and can be adapted for individuals with overlapping neurodivergent profiles. The focus is on understanding your unique cognitive and emotional patterns rather than applying generic advice.
