Adult ADHD Assessments

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain regulates attention, activity levels, and impulse control. ADHD starts in childhood, and for many people these difficulties continue into their adult lives. People with ADHD may find it challenging to focus, stay organised, or manage time effectively, and they might experience restlessness or impulsivity. These traits are not a sign of laziness or lack of ability — rather, they reflect differences in how the brain processes information and responds to stimulation. With understanding, the right support, and tailored strategies, people with ADHD can thrive and make the most of their strengths.

What is an ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a structured and collaborative process designed to understand your symptoms. It involves a detailed clinical interview, psychological questionnaires, and gathering information about your experiences in different settings such as home, work and school. The goal is to build a clear, accurate picture of your strengths and challenges.

Who can be assessed for ADHD?

We offer assessments for adults aged 18 and over who may be experiencing symptoms of ADHD, whether this is a new concern or something you’ve questioned for a long time.

What happens during an assessment?

At the cotswold psychologist, we complete adult ADHD assessments which are NICE-compliant. The process usually takes place over 2-3 appointments, but the exact timing can vary depending on your personal needs and availability. During assessment appointments we will talk about your difficulties in different settings and their impact, as well as talking in depth about your medical history. As a standard we complete a computer based test which gives us an objective measure of your cognitive profile. If possible, we will also speak to someone who knows you well, such as a parent or partner, to gather further information about your difficulties.

A diagnosis is based on clinical judgement using NICE guidelines and recognised diagnostic criteria. We will then meet you to feedback your results, discuss any questions you have, and provide some initial strategies for managing your difficulties.

Will I definitely get a diagnosis?

No. Our assessments use recognised diagnostic criteria and evidence-based tools, in line with NICE guidelines. If you do not meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD, we will aim to suggest an alternative explanation for your difficulties, or recommend further investigation.

How much does an ADHD assessment cost?

Costs are shown on our Fees page

What support is available after diagnosis?

There are two main approaches for people who receive an ADHD diagnosis

  1. Psychological therapy for ADHD refers to non-medication interventions designed to help people manage the practical, emotional, and social challenges linked with ADHD. These therapies focus on building skills, understanding how ADHD affects you, and improving daily functioning through lifestyle adjustments, and/or
  2. ADHD medication

The Cotswold Psychologist is a psychology only service, therefore we are unable to support with prescriptions. We can provide a diagnostic report for your GP, Psychiatrist or other prescribing service who can make such medical decisions.

Will my GP recognise a diagnosis from The Cotswold Psychologist?

We strongly advise that you discuss with your GP/psychiatrist in advance if medication is something you would wish to pursue after diagnosis

Our assessments are carried out by qualified clinical psychologists using recognised diagnostic criteria and evidence-based tools, in line with NICE guidelines. Our comprehensive reports provide detailed clinical reasoning to support diagnostic conclusions. Many GPs and psychiatrists accept our assessments and may use the report to inform ongoing care, including consideration of medication where appropriate. However, prescribing decisions remain the responsibility of the medical professional, and services may have their own internal procedures for accepting community or private assessments. We are happy to communicate with your GP or psychiatrist if helpful.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. Your privacy is our priority. You can see our Privacy Statement and GDPR Policy. All information is handled securely and in line with professional standards. We will not share your report with anyone, such as your GP, without your explicit written permission.

What if I am unsure whether ADHD is the issue?

You don’t have to be certain, part of the assessment is helping you gain a clearer picture of why you’re struggling and what factors might be contributing to that. Whether it’s ADHD or another factor, gaining clarity can be an important step.

We offer everyone an 60-minute initial assessment, to start to understand your difficulties and needs. We will not be able to formally diagnose after this appointment, but we will be able to advise whether we think further assessment for ADHD would be appropriate.
